2LT Michael Simpson

Second Lieutenant Michael John Simpson of 1st Battalion, The Staffordshire Regiment, died on 23rd October 1974.

Service Number: 497510

He was shot by a sniper three weeks previously at the junction of Racecourse Road and Greenhaw Crescent in Londonderry. He was hit in the stomach and the bullet went through his body and hit another soldier in the arm. As Lt. Simpson was lying fatally injured, he managed to report the incident on his radio.

​He was from Sunbury-on-Thames, Middlesex. 

Born on 25 November 1952 he was aged 21.

Mr Simpson was my platoon commander, he was a decent man and an excellent young officer.

I was one of Mike's fellow platoon commanders at the time he was killed. You have summed him up well, Steve. He deserves to be remembered.

did Second Lieutenant Michael John Simpson of 1st Battalion, The Staffordshire Regiment, have a military funeral if not did anyone from the regiment go to the funeral and if so where was Michael Buried Michael was in my training troop 1972in Royal Engineers at Cove I met him again in Nienburg Germany before he went to sandhurst to become a officer and later joined the Staffordshire Regiment
woul like to visit his garage but do not know where he is buried if anyone from the regiment could help it would be gratefully received

Hi Ken,
Yes Michael did have a full military funeral in his home town of Sunbury-on- Thames which was well attended by his platoon and wider regiment members. I have also tried to find where he is buried so I can pay my respects but have not been able to find a grave site for him.
